CAD-CAM List of CNC Machine and Drafting software, some Machine software

CNC-Programming requires "CAM" software knowledge and knowing some "CAD" is a big bonus. "CAD" and "CAM" software can be found together.
CAM software:
CAM is short for "Computer Aided Manufacturing", this software is used to set cut paths based on drawings rendered using a CAD "Computer Aided Design" software.
CAD software isn't limited to proprietary software like "Solidworks", instead you can use "Google-Sketchup" or "Inkskape" to render a drawing, both programs also have powerful plugins available for Rasterizing Vectors among other things.

On to Mach_3...
Mach3 is not an open source program and will cost money but Mach3 one of the more reasonably priced Machine Software programs for Windows, a good G-code reader with few drawbacks.
Mach3 will not operate on older Laptops using a DB25 interface, it also is used most commonly with a Parallel Port opposed to a Serial Port, however it does offer MODBUS support.

Mach3 takes control of the system CPU clock making it independent of the Windows OS hence the restart after install and the problems with operation on some lap-top machines.

Arduino can be used with Mach3, thanks to that MODBUS support, more information on how to set up Arduino (Serial Via USB Interface VS. a Parallel COM or DB25 interface).
The 3D Printer uses "Micro-Controllers" loaded with Firmware and work with software, for example, "Sprinter" "Slic3r" and "Pronterface" together to process, slice, and write to a serial port (USB).
